CHAPTER TEN

At the front desk of the National Security Agency headquarters, Kelly signed in. Langley had an impressive campus sitting at 258 acres. The NSA dwarfed CIA headquarters in comparison. The behemoth agency occupied one and a half times as much land on Fort Meade in Maryland.

A guard passed her a visitor’s badge, and she clipped it to the lapel of her suit jacket. Once he cleared her through the security checkpoint, she spotted Zach.

Tall and lean, he strode toward her wearing a suit with a slim cut and an impeccable fit. A light salmon-colored shirt flattered the olive tones of his skin. His thick black hair was brushed back, not a strand out of place.

“I hope you didn’t come out on my account.” Kelly gave him a quick one-armed embrace before he had a chance to wrap her into one of his bear hugs.

He’d always had a thing for her and had been the first boy to kiss her when they’d both been teenagers. Immediately afterward she knew she’d never see him as anything more than a brother.

“They always notify Public Affairs when a bigwig such as yourself,” he said, waggling his eyebrows, “pops in unexpectedly.” He walked her to the bank of elevators, hit the call button, and the doors opened. “What brings you by?”

They stepped inside together. Kelly hit the button for the top floor.

“I need to see Judith to get some information.”

“Anything I can help you with?”

“I wish, but I need an analyst.” Someone with complete access at the highest levels who could comb through a mountain of information quickly.

“Don’t you have a legion of those at your command at Langley?”

“I do, but it’s complicated.”

The ride up was smooth, and he got off with her, sticking to her side.

“I’m going to hit the restroom first. It was great to see you.”

“Oh, I’ll wait for you.”

Smothering a groan, she entered the ladies’ room and ducked into a stall.
